Trucking insurance is one of the most important — and confusing — parts of running a trucking operation. Whether you're an owner-operator or managing a fleet, understanding your coverage is key to staying compliant, protecting your assets, and avoiding costly gaps.

The Core Coverages Every Trucker Should Know

There are several types of insurance policies in trucking, but here are the core ones that most motor carriers and owner-operators need:

  • Primary Liability Insurance: Required by the FMCSA for operating authority. It covers injuries or property damage you cause to others while operating your truck.

  • Physical Damage Coverage: Pays for repairs to your own truck and trailer in case of an accident, theft, or vandalism. Not required by law, but essential if you finance or lease equipment.

  • Cargo Insurance: Covers the freight you're hauling in case of loss or damage. Often required by brokers and shippers.

  • Bobtail Insurance (Non-Trucking Liability): Covers your truck when it's being driven without a trailer, outside of dispatch. Often confused with non-trucking liability, which applies only during strictly personal use.

  • General Liability: Covers accidents and property damage that occur off-road — like in a yard, dock, or office.

  • Trailer Interchange Insurance: Needed if you pull trailers that you don’t own under an interchange agreement.

Common Insurance Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not Understanding Deductibles and Exclusions: Some policies may have high deductibles or specific exclusions that leave you vulnerable.

  • Being Underinsured: Choosing the bare minimum coverage might save money upfront, but it can lead to financial disaster in an accident.

  • Assuming Coverage Is Automatic: Some new drivers think cargo or bobtail insurance is bundled — but these are often separate policies.

  • Failing to Update Coverage: As your operation changes (e.g., new trucks, new drivers, new lanes), your insurance needs will shift too.

Conclusion

Insurance is not just a cost — it’s a key part of your safety net. Knowing your coverage inside and out can help you protect your livelihood, stay compliant, and respond smartly when things go wrong. If you’re not sure your current policy fits your business, it might be time for a coverage review.
